Alongside the filmmaker Nico Mu – I had the honor of sharing the story of teenager Bayan Mahmud – an African refugee and orphan who fled Ghana after a civil war broke out. In the outbreak of war, his parents were murdered, he was separated from his brother and he secretly boarded and then hid inside a container of a cargo ship – unbeknownst to him, bound for the foreign land of Argentina. Later, a chance football game in a local plaza led to his discovery where he became a youth member for the infamous Buenos Aires football club Boca Juniors.
Nico and I found him as as Bayan was embarking on his desperate search for his missing brother, overcoming the scars of his past and assimilating into Argentine culture; all while as a footballer, dreaming of playing professionally in the infamous La Bombonera stadium adorned in the Gold and Blue.
There are so many components and twists to Bayan’s story it was challenging to visualize his journey figuratively and literally – yet everyone involved on the project was incredibly patient and forthcoming – it was an immense pleasure to showcase.
