After being invited to speak on a friend’s radio show (unbeknownst to me, he completely surprised me!) and talk entirely in Spanish about my experience as a foreign journalist in Buenos Aires – I had such a great time. I was always searching for fun ways to better my Spanish while engaging in activities that helped me professionally. So the idea of starting my own radio show was born. With a stranger I met from my Craig’s List post (seriously!) we started Che Que Se Yo, a spin on a popular Argentine phrase. (Best translation, perhaps: ‘What do I know?’)
The pitch: a Spanish/English radio show told from the niche perspective of two foreigners living in BA, speaking interchangeably. Explaining, ranting, deliberating about the random and strange quirks this city embodies; our nuances and our adorations with the chaotic but irresistible Buenos Aires. It was a great mix, I am female from the US, he is a Brazilian male – both in mid, early 20’s. We had such distinct backgrounds, voices and upbringings that it created a show that pushed boundaries, was often crude and vulgar, and always filled with wacky banter. We had no idea what we were doing but it was great fun trying to figure it out and there definitely wasn’t anyone else like us on air. After 8 months, our work schedules got too busy to continue devoting the proper time to the program, but it was a hell of a run.
Here are 3 of the shows
